Summary
The Camargue, a vast deltaic plain of the Rhône subject to great mobility,
both fluvial and coastal, had not been the subject of systematic archaeolo-
gical research until recently. Among the sites studied since 1995 as part of
research initiated by the Ministry of Culture, is the village of La Capelière
located on the banks of the Rhône d'Ulmet, one of the major branches of
the river in Antiquity. The excavations carried out on this river site from 1997 to 2002 by a
multidisciplinary team made up of archaeologists, geographers and
specialists in natural sciences, have renewed our vision of the occupation
of the delta. Through the analysis of all archaeological data (vernacular
architecture, stratigraphy and furniture), environmental data as well as
agro-pastoral or fishing resources, these studies illustrate the successive
cultural evolutions of this village over a period of ten centuries, from the 5th
century BCE to the 6th century CE, interspersed with moments of
abandonment. Dimensions 22 x 27 x 2.5 cm
