Roman sculpture in the West. New looks.
Summary
This work brings together the results of two complementary events: on the one hand, the round table
entitled “Render to Caesar?”, organized on Wednesday June 20, 2012, in Paris, at the Louvre museum and,
on the other hand, the “Meetings around Roman sculpture preserved in France”, which took place from
October 18 to 20, 2012 at the Arles antique departmental museum.
The richness of the interventions during these two events makes it possible to produce a work composed
of thirty-eight articles, divided into three parts and a conclusion. The first, echoing and developing the
round table at the Louvre, concerns the portrait of the “Caesar of the Rhône”, as well as “The Roman
portrait in Gaul”. The second publishes five studies around “new scientific investigation techniques?” a
nd presents the analysis of the materials of stone and bronze sculptures, discovered in the Rhône in Arles,
as well as an ethnoarchaeological study on portrait production techniques. Finally, a final section
presents “recent discoveries and new research”, broken down into sixteen studies which are devoted to
case studies (Autun, Vaison-la-Romaine, Nîmes, Metz-Divodurum, Apt), as well as 'to innovative rereadings
of little-known sculptures (Plouarzel, Langres, Avignonet-Lauragais, Vernègues, Ubaye valley, Besançon,
Lyon). Robert Turcan signs the conclusion.
